Why Natural Fibers Changed How I Dress. A Beginner Friendly Guide

Updated: 3 days ago

Hi, I am Liz, and I never thought I would be someone who cared about fabric labels. For most of my life, I chose clothes based on how cute they were, what was trending, and the price. I never stopped to think about what my clothes were actually made of or how they affected my body throughout the day. Everything changed when I started paying attention to how certain fabrics made me feel.

There was a period where I kept noticing the same uncomfortable problem. I would shower, apply deodorant, and leave my house feeling clean and fresh, yet a few hours into wearing certain tops I would develop body odor in my armpits. It happened most often when I wore polyester tops. At first, I thought it was just me, but then my friends and family shared similar experiences. That was my wake up moment. If so many of us were noticing the same thing, there had to be a reason behind it. This curiosity pushed me to learn more about fabrics, especially natural ones, and it completely changed the way I dress.

Natural fibers became the first thing I researched because I wanted to understand what made them different. I was surprised to learn that the materials we wear can affect how our skin feels, how fresh we stay, and even how confident we feel throughout the day. Learning about natural fibers felt like discovering a secret that everyone should know.

Natural fibers are materials that come from nature. They are created from plants or animals and then spun into threads to make clothing and textiles. What makes them special is that they do not come from a lab and they do not rely on plastic based materials. Some of the most common natural fibers include cotton, linen, wool, and silk. These fabrics feel more breathable and comfortable on the skin, which is why many people fall in love with them once they try them.

Cotton is one of the most popular natural fibers in the world. It feels soft, breathable, and gentle on the skin. Cotton works well for everyday clothing such as tee shirts, blouses, pajamas, and undergarments. Personally, cotton is one of my favorite natural fibers because it allows my skin to breathe, especially on busy days when I am commuting or running errands. If you are new to natural fibers, cotton is a great place to start because it is easy to find and fits into almost any wardrobe.

Linen quickly became a summer life saver for me. Linen comes from the flax plant and is known for feeling light, airy, and cool on the skin. It has tiny natural fibers that allow air to flow easily through the fabric which makes it ideal for hot or humid weather. Living in New York City, I rely on the subway to get around and the summer heat can feel intense, especially underground. The air feels heavy and crowded trains make it even warmer. Wearing linen has helped me stay cool and comfortable during busy train rides. The first time I wore a linen shirt on a hot summer day, I felt such a difference. It felt refreshing, almost like my skin could breathe again.

Many people who try linen for the first time are surprised by how light it feels and how it helps them stay cool. Some people do not love that linen wrinkles more easily than other fabrics, but many find that the relaxed and natural look adds charm and effortless style to their outfits.

Silk is another natural fiber that feels luxurious and soft on the skin. It comes from the cocoons of silkworms and has been used for centuries to create elegant clothing and bedding. Silk feels smooth, comfortable, and gentle, which makes it a great choice for both clothing and self care items. One of the ways I enjoy silk is through silk pillowcases. They feel incredibly soft to sleep on and they help reduce hair breakage. Ever since I started sleeping on silk pillowcases, I noticed that my hair looks and feels healthier in the morning. If you struggle with frizz or hair breakage, a silk pillowcase can make a noticeable difference. Silk clothing can also elevate a simple outfit and make you feel more polished and confident.

Wool is a natural fiber that comes from sheep. It is known for keeping the body warm which makes it great for winter clothing. One of the most interesting things about wool is that it helps regulate body temperature. It keeps you warm in cold weather, but can also keep you comfortable in slightly warmer weather. For now, all you need to know is that wool is a great natural option for sweaters, coats, and cozy pieces when the temperature drops.

One of the biggest differences I noticed after switching to natural fibers is how my body feels throughout the day. Natural fibers allow air to flow which helps prevent sweat from getting trapped. When fabric can breathe, it feels lighter and more comfortable on your skin. Natural fibers also absorb moisture in a more natural way, so you do not get that sticky or sweaty feeling that synthetic fabrics can cause. If you have sensitive skin, natural fibers can be a complete game changer. Many people find that cotton, linen, or silk feel gentler and less irritating because the skin is not struggling to breathe under plastic based material.

You can begin with the things you wear most. For many people, tops make a big difference, so replacing one polyester top with a cotton or linen one can make an immediate impact. Do not rush or throw anything away. I am still in the process of replacing items in my closet and there is no deadline. The goal is to create a wardrobe that feels good on your skin and supports your lifestyle.

Here is a little bestie moment before you go. You deserve clothes that make you feel comfortable, confident, and like your best self. Switching to natural fibers is not just a fashion choice. It is a form of self care. Your skin deserves to breathe. Your body deserves comfort. You deserve to feel fresh and confident all day. You do not need to change everything overnight. Start small and have fun with it. Maybe your first step is buying one cotton top you love or trying a linen piece this summer. Maybe it is treating yourself to a silk pillowcase so you can wake up with smoother hair. Every little step counts.

And let me tell you, once you feel the difference that natural fibers make, it becomes hard to go back. Your closet is about to level up and I cannot wait for you to experience it.
